FOREWORD

It should be pointed out, in the beginning, that the basic
concepts of this the 1964 Edition of the DRAGON differ very
little from previous editions.

During the 1962-1963 school year and the summer of 1963
we have been surrounded by the hum of building construction
activities.

Building more and better classrooms
Building better lives,

Building new programs

Building a better yearbook

Building a good offensive team

Building the foundations for social growth
Building better worlds,

Building!

Building the old into the new,

BUILDING FOR TOMORROW, TODAY.

So, it seems that the thoughts and the sights of building
activities have permeated our very being, and from these
have evolved concepts that we hope will guide us in the years
after graduation.

We have tried to capture the spirit of our theme: BUILDING
FOR TOMORROW, TODAY, through the activities that have
surrounded us for the past year and a half. Our efforts are

herein presented graphically, hoping that this presentation

may serve to keep alive the spirit that seems to cause men
to ''thirst after'’ achievements.

DEDICATION

“
7
=

We take great pride in dedicating our
1964 DRAGON to one who has well
merited the honor. Mrs. Kate G. Hen-
derson, counselor, who is now retired,
worked zealously for the progress of
the school and exerted much influence
in making Maggie L. Walker one of

the most outstanding High Schools in
Virginia.

For your long years of dedicated
services, Mrs. Henderson, we thank

you and hope for you happiness in the MesdiicatetGmeiliendearon
years to come.

Listening while others praise the contributions that
Mrs. Henderson has made to the education of youth.

Mrs. Plummer pins an orchid on Mrs.
Henderson, while Dr. Henderson looks on.

Our Principals, Mr. J. Harry Williams and Mr. William F. Segar, smile in spite of the many duties and
responsibilities related to a vast building program.

MAGGIE L. WALKER HIGH SCHOOL
1000 NORTH LOMBARDY STREET
Richmond 20, Virginia

October 25, 1963

Dear Senior:

We congratulate you on your present attainment. The horizon
of graduation is well within your view. Your theme, "Building
Today for Tomorrow," indicates that you are aware of the need for
preparation to meet the challenges of the years which lie ahead.
We admonish you to continue your diligence in the pursuit of
learning.

The doors of opportunity reflect the technological changes
of our times. Automation is rapidly eliminating unskilled jobs
and creating new ones for educated individuals. We hope that
you will continue to study and prepare yourself for the unlimited
job opportunities which will be yours.

Your place in the sun will be directly proportionate to the
quality of your preparation.

"If you write a better book,

Or preach a better sermon,

Or build a better mousetrap than your neighbor,
The world will make a beaten track to your door."

sincerely yours,

This class of boys P.E. is
being taught by Mr.
Williams.

THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT FEELS
THAT since education implies change, we must think
in terms of how we wish to change people. In the P.E,
classes we try to teach the HOW and the WHY in
order to achieve the objectives of the Department.
All of the teaching and techniques involve determining
what ought to happen to boys and girls and then know-
ing how to make it happen.

A typical exercise among boys, in our
Physical Education classes. Douglas Hatcher,
Winston Anderson, Alfred Johnson.

CLASS SONG

THE REAPER
(In the tune of ''Tonight"’)

lL. 7a.
Dear Walker High, In fields of knowledge we've
We now must say good-bye; been sowing;
These years, forever near we shall keep. In wisdom we've been growing
Through faith and fears Through these great years gone
Of these our cherished years, by.
We have sowed; now we go; we must reap! We'll walk through broader

fields of learning
Our hearts forever yearning
To keep thy honor high!

OF
We'll reach great heights
Through weary toil and strife.
As we live, we will give, time will tell!
With hearts so true;
With joy e'er shinning through,
We now say, ‘Happy Days, Fare thee
well!"

CLASS POEM

Longevity
For three long years we've labored here,
But was it all in vain?
Had we the chance to do it o'er,
Would we do it again?

The teachers are the best there are,
The classrooms are divine.

And when we leave these blessed walls,
We'll make our knowledge shine.

We'll make our knowledge shine.for days,
And years, on land and on the seas.

Then parents and teachers will be proud,
Yes, proud of you and me.

So as we leave these blessed walls

Of Maggie Walker High.

We'll take our tears, and leave our fears
And bid you all Good-bye.
